Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye rifles have an air of century-old hunting rifle tradition. However, they are actually made
with very modern manufacturing processes, using very modern materials and finishes. The Model 77 Hawkeye is chambered for all of the popular standard cartridges, as well as a slew of new proprietary cartridges. This model translates well into a variety of chambers from the varmint shooting 204 Ruger right on up to the big 416 Ruger.
Most other Ruger M77 Hawkeyes I've handled have a matte black metal finish. This model has an attractive deep black gloss finish from barrel to bottom metal. It didn't seem to mar or scuff in use and it cleans up easily with a quick cloth wipe. The bolt is stainless, as is the case with all Ruger bolt action models. The satin finished walnut used on Ruger stocks these days is not as plain as it once was. There is just enough contrast and figure in grain to set off the clean checkering and patterns and to give the rifle a touch of character.

The Ruger 22 Charger pistol was announced in December of 2007, a Ruger 10/22 derivative. In addition to recreational target shooting and varmint/small game hunting applications, both the original and current Charger fit well into special local and unlimited rimfire pistol silhouette competition where shooting distances may extend beyond 200 meters. The original Charger remained in production for approximately five years, before being discontinued in early 2013.

Ruger’s reputation as the king of rimfire is well deserved. For decades it has produced affordable, accurate plinkers, varmint rifles and handguns. Countless shooters made their entry into the world of shooting with a Ruger rimfire handgun. Indeed, my first rimfire pistol was a bull-barrel stainless MK II. While I love this handgun for reasons equal parts nostalgia and objective appreciation, it does have a few shortcomings.
